Reader Tristan Miller, commenting on my previous post about the Ultima IV disk-flipping exploit, wondered what would happen if you reversed it -- that is to say, entered a room in a dungeon after putting the Britannia disk (or, in the case of emulation, its image) in the drive. The above screenshot shows the result of my attempt to do just that, in a room at the bottom of the dungeon Hythloth. Pretty, but not very playable: the main character is stuck in water and the others aren't even visible. I also tried a couple of variants.
Finally, the next image shows what happens when the surface world attempts a disk access while there is no disk in the drive at all:
That's a lot of castles! I'm assuming you could fly over them in a balloon, but never be able to land anywhere.
These variants of the exploit are amusing, but lack my two favorite features of the Britannia-to-Dungeon swap: the ability to traverse the strange new landscape, and the practicality of infinite treasure chests. Thanks for the suggestion, Tristan!
