I had never considered the top view this way. To take it to the other end of your low-tech example, I can't help but relate it now to that intriguing experience I feel when a plane makes its final approach near a built and familiar area. The moment it is turning at a 10° inclination, one can have a look at the world below: it all feels quite unreal, like looking at a diorama or miniatures. Some sort of a reverse "uncanny valley", where it is the real world that just seems surreal, while we are much more used to the games' offerings. And it is so mesmerizing.

Yeah, plane landings are a trip (literally and figuratively...) Especially the little toybox cars that don't seem to be moving at the right speed. They look like the train in Mr. Rogers's Neighborhood, or something.
